Quote Of The Day: Mark Dever

I want you to try a thought exercise. Suppose a business school class on non-profit organizations assigns its students the task of building a successful church. And ssume all the students are non-Christians. Could they succeed?

Sure they could! With the right poll-tested methods, just about anyone can draw a crowd. If ambience sells coffee, why not use it to sell Jesus? If music sells clothing, why not use it to market the church? The church might even with a "Most Innovative!" award.

Yet think about this: what does it say about God if we need to market his glory and gospel with the same tools we use to sell toothpaste and laundry detergent? Is he really that desperate?

God is so much more glorious. He has declared a mighty gospel and then backed us his words by changing a group of people. There's the church's appeal: The wisdom of God. The might of God. The love of God. On display in the lives of a changed people for all the world to see!

Is your church relying on natural appeal or supernatural? Whose glory does it display?

Whos' On First?

I am glad this blog is not just called truth and love. For starters TAL doesn't sound as good as TALIA. But more importantly it is understood that truth and love are nothing without action. I can testify to this based on the way God has moved in my life the past few days. The young lady I have been talking to recently decided that we needed to take a step back from each other because there are some things that needed to be straightened out. There was no promise of resuming any sort of communication and so it has been pretty emotionally painful to say the least. However, with the pain and emotional distress that comes with this sort of stuff there also comes a decision: Am I going to turn from God and try to fill my life with earthly pleasure or am I going to turn to God and find my fill in His joy? Praise be to God that He has given me the desire to turn to Him. The past few days have been some of the hardest I can remember emotionally, yet some of the most fulfilling spiritually.

You see, I have always served God out of the pleasure and comfortability that is my wicked heart. I have always been the "right type" of Christian and said all the "right" things. But my heart was not His. It was mine. I had just added God as a back-up plan or a fixer when I needed Him. I have never truly been completely dependent on Him. If I took a "step of faith", I always had to see what was beneath my foot. As much as I believed God was first in my life, my conscious told me that I was first.

It took a shake-up from God to bring to my knees in repentance. I was watching a sermon from Francis Chan on priorities and the passage he was speaking from hit me like a ton of bricks. It was the first chapter Haggai:

1 In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying, 2 “Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time has not come, the time that the LORD’s house should be built.”’”
3 Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying, 4 “Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?” 5 Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways!

6 “ You have sown much, and bring in little;
      You eat, but do not have enough;
      You drink, but you are not filled with drink;
      You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm;
      And he who earns wages,
Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”
7 Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways! 8 Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the LORD. 9 “You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says the LORD of hosts. “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house. 10Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit. 11 For I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labor ofyour hands."12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the LORD. 13 Then Haggai, the LORD’s messenger, spoke the LORD’s message to the people, saying, “I am with you, says the LORD.” 14 So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.

The Israelites had just returned to their land and they hadn't begun rebuilding God's temple because they felt it wasn't the right time. Instead, they took to task in building their own houses and taking pleasure in their houses looking good rather than putting God and His house first. And so, God punished them by taking everything away. He wanted to be priority number one in the hearts and lives of His people (if you notice He refers to them as 'this' people). In response the people obeyed God and His response to them was that He was with them!

God has taken a big part of my life away because He was not number one in my life. I have become spiritually lazy and thought that somehow I could manipulate the Creator of the universe!!?? But God in His goodness has convicted me and I am responding in the only way I can...obedience. Over the past few days God has opened up doors for me to teach in children's church, start a men's prayer group, and amazingly has possibly made a way for me to go to either Thailand, Egypt, or Burkina Faso in Africa. A week ago I was content with my life...why...because it was MY life. Now my world has been turned upside down and I am learning to be content in Him. God must be priority number one and have complete control. He accepts no other position. I am thankful that He is teaching me and that His grace covers my sin. Praise GOD!

God's Providence and the NT Canon

Despite the popularity of Christianity throughout the world, very few converts actually know and understand the heritage of their faith. When a certain historical event of that faith is called into question, the modern-day Christian has to research and refute any false claims. One such historical event often misinterpreted or flat out ignored is the Canonization of ancient Apostolic writings that we know today as the New Testament in our Bibles. Unfortunately, Christians today have a difficult time defending this essential conjuncture because they do not understand the process and history behind it. The goal of this post will be to share and educate others about the miraculous provision of God through the development of the Bible we have today, and equip fellow believers to cast down arguments and any high thing that exalts itself above God's truth.

Throughout the centuries, the NT writings have been attacked and brought into question by said "scholars" regarding whether or not they were authoritative inspired writ. The attack on scripture is nothing new: it began at the very beginning when the serpent questioned God’s word to Eve (Genesis 3:1) and continues today through acclaimed “scholarship”, media, and heritage of those determined to destroy Truth altogether. Results from such heinous attacks actually worked in favor of the early Christians: the New Testament Canon. I will give you in this brief sum-up, my beloved readers: 1.) A historical background to what stimulated the canonization 2.) Methods used to determine canonicity 3.) The amazing ramifications. I hope through this endeavor to present to you a clear vision of God’s gracious providence and sovereignty over the wiles of the devil and provision of His Word. The grass whithers and the flower fades, but the word of God stands forever. Isaiah 40:8

Numero uno: The early Christians already had the Old Testament writings from God through the Jewish heritage. During the early stages of the young church, Christ's appointed apostles began to write letters and epistles to the small growing churches during the years 45AD-140AD. These letters were considered written under the inspiration of God, with authoritative content, by all the Christian churches, and were to be read at their regular gatherings. None of the writers or members of the church were aware how these letters would eventually fit in the overall canon of Scripture, but were accepted on the various characteristics of an inspired text: Authoritative, consistency, prophecy, inerrency, etc. The proof that these letters were held in the same honor as the OT scriptures, were the public worship services modeling after services in Synagogues that always consisted of reading Scripture. The Synagogues had the OT read, and the early church read the letters alongside the OT readings. Having a set group of writings regarding Christ, His body, and eschatology were vital for the health and growth of the church. These letters provided a foundation of Christian doctrine for believers, written and handed down by the apostles, as Christianity moved throughout the Mediterranean world.

2.) God is even sovereign over heretics. The ongoing false teaching surrounding the early church caused the orthodox leaders to mark out and appoint which books and letters were truth. One such error was the canon of Marcion. In about the year 144 AD, a biblical critic named Marcion traveled to Rome sharing his gospel of the “god of love.” He brought with him his own assembled canon of what he considered Scripture. His teaching was that there were two separate God’s revealed in the Old and New Testaments: A god of “wrath” and a god of “love”. The Roman church quickly discredited Marcion’s message as heresy, but he had sparked a revolution among the frail Christian church. The apostolic writings, although already considered inspired Scripture, had to be officially canonized to protect the revealed doctrine from corruption. While mad heresy was invading the church and the rise of gnosticism (2nd century) grew chaotic at the time, debate of which letters were actual Scripture had to be finalized.

Another event instigating the accumulation of Holy Writ was the rapidly grown missions work. Looking at Jesus’ promise that he will build His church (Mt. 16:18) was evident in the spreading of the gospel to the surrounding regions. During this widespread evangelism, a need to translate the Bible into the native languages grew. People needed to learn, read, and hear God's truth. The Old Testament was already available for the missionaries, but the New Testament had not been put together yet thus forcing the church to finalize what was recognized as inspired writing.

Missions were growing and church plants were popping up everywhere. Yet where ever God is working, the enemy is sure to be tailing along. Roman leaders were weighing intense persecution on the church and at the start of the fourth century Emperor Diocletian issued that all Christian literature be burned. The Christians had to take close consideration which books to burn and which they considered had Divine authority and had to be protected, and sometimes, at the cost of their lives.

Finally, a more timid incentive to finalize the NT collection, was when the emperor Constantine asked early church historian Eusebius to make 50 copies of the New Testament for him in 313 AD.

Of course, much more went into canonizing the New Testament then just a group of Christians deciding what they liked and disliked. A major factor in the development was the already accepted books and letters. The NT did not come together by the church deciding what was Scripture, but rather a process of recognizing what was already written by God. In the Hebrew nation when God had given a book of inspiration to the people, they already recognized it as what it was and put it with the rest of the inspired texts.

Several tests were also given to the writings to confirm their authenticity and authority. One was the test of Authorship. All books were written by either apostles or those appointed by Christ. This excludes any writing independent of the apostles or disciples. Another test was that of universal Christian acceptance. If the book in question was widely accepted by the Christian church as the word of God than it was considered authoritative. Finally, the test of inspiration was the true and final test of canonicity. The Divine authority of the writing was relevant for the church now and future generations.

“Until heaven and earth pass away not one jot nor one tittle will by no means pass from the law until all is fulfilled” (Mt. 5:18). God has always in time pass and will always continue to preserve His word. Over the centuries, the NT that we have today has been preserved under the providence of God. Despite the overwhelming persecution the early church had to face, the way to preserve God’s word was to make countless copies of the original texts. Although the original manuscripts are no longer in existence today, copies of the originals are available. But how do we know if the copies we have today are still accurate? How do we know some cult didn't get their grubby hands on them and corrupted these "sacred texts"? Although minor inconsistencies have been spotted, the differences are minor to the original manuscripts. How do we know this? The discovery of the dead sea scrolls in the 1940's revealed the amazing accuracy of copied OT manuscripts, as well as other various textual criticism scholars use today.

All in all, the most important thing to understand in the canonization of the NT is the gracious providence of God. God’s promise that all may fade but His word will stand (Is. 40:8) is enough alone to stand firm in the preservation of His word. History, human reason, or what your "heart feels" are all inadequate "measuring rods" to discern if the Bible is indeed true. There is no other authority than that of God's word. Aside that, we can see through history the development, acceptance, and spreading of the early Bible. Translations through the means of monks, publicists, and modern copiers the Bible has been widely distributed. What was once a rare text to have and valued at the cost of life, is now available for many consisting in many different translations, styles, and formats. God is good.

New Attitude 2008 is Memorial Weekend. Unfortunately for me, my fellowship study at church has a retreat the same weekend. I really do not want to miss NA this year. However, I don't think it would be right for me to miss the Grace retreat.

weapons for warfare: FREE

Luke 11:5-13

"And He [Jesus]said to them, suppose one of you shall have a friend and shall go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey and I have nothing to set before him.” And from inside he shall answer and say, “Do not bother me. The door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed. I cannot get up and get you anything, or give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs. And I say to you, ask and it shall be given to you, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it shall be opened. Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish, he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? Or if he has asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? If you then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"

The Christian life is a war. Our heavenly Father is ready to give us what he has already promised us. He has a whole warehouse of promises in scripture that we need to grab a hold of. The artillary is available.

Look at what Martyn Lloyd Jones says of prayer:

"This holy boldness, this argumentation, this reasoning, this putting the case before God, this pleading His own promises, this is the whole secret of prayer."
"Quote the scripture to Him."

Thomas Goodwin (puritan hero) says:

"When you pray, you literally can go to God and say what’s on your heart and claim His promise. In fact, you can demand that He be faithful to His promise. Sue Him for it!."

grace in effect

"To suppose that whatever God requireth of us that we have power of ourselves to do, is to make the cross and grace of Jesus Christ of none effect"

-John Owen (puritan hero)

why did they believe?

Was it because they mustered up enough will to choose?

Acts 13:48

"When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed."

Because God is Eternal, Omnipotent and Sovereign over time, space, and sinful man's will.

unfair

The opening verse to the song "Before The Cross" from the Sovereign Grace worship album "Songs From The Cross Centered Life" says:

My Savior’s sacrifice paid for all my sin
So in my suffering I look to the cross again
No need, no want, no trial, no pain
Can compare to this
The wrath of God, once meant for me
Was all spent on Him

Isaiah 53:5,10

"But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our
iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his
wounds we are healed."

"Yet it was the LORD'S will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and
though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring
and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand."

(If I ever say that life is unfair, please quote these verses to me... please.)

Brent is a attends Bethlehem Baptist Church where he sits under the pulpit ministry of John Piper. He is currently finishing up his Bachelors degree both at community college and soon to be at Bethlehem Institute. At the moment, he is unsure of his calling.

Now Brent has some words to say about himself:

About me:
"As much as my hard heart was determined to resist God, God's grace was more determined to save me."

Jesus sought me when a stranger,

Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood;
How His kindness yet pursues me
Mortal tongue can never tell,
Clothed in flesh, till death shall loose me
I cannot proclaim it well.

I am a great sinner and Jesus is a great savior. I am insignificant; he is of greatest significance. I am irrelevant; he is always relevant. I am a failure; he is the greatest success. I am stupid; he is perfectly wise. I am weak; He is strong. I know very little and what I do know I usually forget; he knows everything, and recalls it all with perfect clarity. I am a self-deceiving liar; he is truth. I am unloving; he is love. I am constantly messing up; he is perfect. I have very little; he owns everything. I am deserving only of death; he is life. I am here only for but a brief moment; he has been, is, and will be forever more. I am nothing; he is everything. So about me? It’s not. It’s about Him.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

His dying crimson, like a robe,
Spreads o’er His body on the tree;
Then I am dead to all the globe,
And all the globe is dead to me.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

To Christ, who won for sinners grace
By bitter grief and anguish sore,
Be praise from all the ransomed race
Forever and forevermore.

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea.
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart.
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free.
For God the just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.

Behold Him there the risen Lamb,
My perfect spotless righteousness,
The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace,
One in Himself I cannot die.
My soul is purchased by His blood,
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ my Savior and my God!

Joshua is possibly the reason this blog even exists. His commitment and love for Christ and His Word and his relentless/contagious declaration of the Gospel is what God has used to change many hearts... including some of us Talians directly. Christ will build His church as He promised; we can't wait to see how Josh participates in God's sovereign means to His own promises.

WE INTERUPT JOEY'S BIOGRAPHY OF JOSH TO BRING YOU JOSH'S MINI AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF...WELL, HIMSELF!

I am a great sinner, but I have a greater Savior. Because Christ is the head of the body, I have an intense love for the church. My brothers and sisters in Christ are second only to but radically connected to God. It is a joy to labor in and study God's self-revelation and preach from it each week. You could not pay me to stop preaching...and you could not pay me to start preaching. God's Word is a fire in my bones and I'd die trying to keep it in. It needs to be preached to saint and sinner alike.

I have been married for 14 years to my high school sweetheart whom I dated for 4 1/2 years. Our marriage is stronger than ever. I have a little girl who is currently six years old and as cute as can be. I have another daughter that was adopted in 1999. She is living on her own. There is a dog in our family....his name is Jack and he likes Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain (a little joke there). But he's not into Yoga and he has half a brain.

Since I am in the middle of planting a church, I've had to take seculare emloyment. I sell cars...honestly and with honesty. I like to fake the guitar...I mean play. I am a lover of hymns and any modern song that reminds me of my wretchedness and my wonderful Savior. I am always reading about six books at a time. My vice is movies....I love to watch movies.

Many in the church today seek to win the world with love and tend to suppress the truth. Liz Oleck is a warrior holding a banner for truth running like a kamikaze into the front lines of battle. She's bold and courageous. However she also strives to love when loving is hard and longs to bear the burden of others.

Liz is a part of the Sovereign Grace Church on the westside of Orlando (Grace Church) where she sings in the worship band. She is also involved in the singles ministry and is currently in school to pursue a degree in English. She hopes to write some books someday covering topics such as singleness and worldliness.

My story really began in 2007 when I was dead in my trespasses and sin. It wasn't until God opened my eyes to the Gospel of Jesus Christ at the most unlikeliest of times, that I came to full reliance on and full submission to Christ. I started the Talia blog around that time.

I am in need of the cross of Christ on a daily basis.

I am blessed to be member of Grace Community Church sitting under the pulpit ministry of John MacArthur.  I also work at the church where I help with conferences and the bookstore.  I also serve in the college/career ministry - particularly at an outreach Bible study on the campus of California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts).

pergamum

Revelation 2:12-13

"And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: The One who has the sharp two-edged sword says this:

'I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is..."

Pergamum was the city in which the altar/temple of Zeus was. Zeus was the chief of the Greek gods/idols.

Paul showed the parallel between demons and idols in his letters, even using the words interchangeably.

"The things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with demons...if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake..." (1 Cor.10:20,28).

The Old Testament (the Septuagint) used the word 'daimonion' for "idol" in Dt. 32:17 and Ps. 106:37; which is translated "demon" in the New Testament. Psalm 106:36-39 rebukes Israel and shows the parallel of the idols of Canaan to demons:

"They (Israel) served their idols; which were a snare unto them. Yea, they sacrificed their sons and daughters unto demons, and shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan...Thus they were defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions".

What is interesting is that in the book of Revelation, God refers to Zeus' temple in Pergamum as the "throne of satan". (Revelation 2:13) The temple of zeus was built by Eumenes II. Eumenes discipled Antiochus Epiphanes who ruled from Pergamum and was an avid zeus worshiper and advocated evangelization of zeus and the hatred of the Jews. He then committed the Abomination of Desolation and erected the altar of zeus in the temple in Jerusalem and sacrificed a pig (unclean to Jews) in the temple. (prophecy in Daniel 9:27) Occured in 167 B.C.

2000 years later, in the 1880's, German archaeologists in Pergamum request (from Ottomon rulers) the removal of the temple of zeus to have it rebuilt in Germany. The Muslim rulers consented, and the Temple of zeus resides to this day in Germany.

Wikipedia: Pergamum Altar

50 years after the rebuilding of the temple in Berlin, Adolph Hitler and his propaganda minister became enamored with the temple and even gave mesmerizing speeches to massive crowds in front of a replica of The temple/altar of Pergamum (Pergamon) (AKA The throne of satan).

Hitler was ironically very friendly with Arabic leader Mufti of Jerusalem because of their mutual hatred of the Jews.

75 years later, another man mesmerized crowds in Germany - Barak Obama. The only presidential candidate to ever give a foreign policy speech in another country.
Did Barak visit the Pergamum temple?

Barak in Germany:

Well... when Barak returned to the U.S. to give his acceptance speech in Denver, Colorodo, he wanted to give a speech from a replica of a Greek building.

When photos of the building went up, everyone recognized the building quickly. It was a replica of the Temple of Pergamum (Pergamon). Even mainstream news recognized it:
U.S. News - Obama's Acceptance Speech

The excuses came, stating it was a replica of the White House or Capital building, however experts and anyone who takes a look at the photos agree, it was a replica of the Temple of Pergamum.

alyssa

"By the grace of God," Alyssa (and Paul in 1 Corinthians) says, "I am what I am."
Her aim is to live life by a single God-exalting, soul-satisfying passion, and that passion is for the supremacy of God in all things. Her ambition is to gladly make others glad in God; to point them to Him for everlasting joy; (according to her facebook.)

Alyssa hails from Fort Wayne, Indiana.
